Lou and Margaret Thrailkill were early believers in Community Colleges of Spokane Foundation.

"It was the happiest day in Lou's life when he gifted his life insurance policy over to the Community Colleges of Spokane," Margaret Thrailkill, Lou's wife, recalled.

His gift established the Lou and Margaret Ross Thrailkill Endowment, which provides scholarships for outstanding SCC and SFCC students, who are selected to work with college faculty in return for financial assistance and valuable work experience. Margaret purchased a similar life insurance policy on herself and made CCS Foundation and the Thrailkill endowment the beneficiary.

But Margaret did even more to secure a strong future for the Foundation. She set up a Charitable Remainder Unitrust and named the Community Colleges of Spokane as the beneficiary. In establishing this trust, Margaret was able to transfer appreciated assets to the trust, bypassing capital gains tax, increasing her income from the assets, and receiving a charitable income tax deduction - all while making a substantial gift to CCS Foundation.

Because of their thoughtful planning and generous gifts, the Thrailkills' love of CCS will endure for future generations of CCS students.
